Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal's history centers on a grand tale of love and loss: Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it in 1631 as a magnificent mausoleum for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child. Built with white marble and inlaid with precious stones, the complex took about 22 years (completed ~1653) with 20,000 artisans, becoming a pinnacle of Mughal architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolizing eternal love.
Agra Fort's history began before the Mughals, but it was Emperor Akbar who rebuilt it as a red sandstone fortress and capital around 1565-1573, transforming a brick fort (Badalgarh) into a grand walled city and military hub. Successors like Jahangir and Shah Jahan added exquisite white marble palaces, mosques, and halls (Diwan-i-Khas). It served as the main Mughal residence until 1638, witnessed battles, and famously became the prison for Shah Jahan, who watched the Taj Mahal from the Musamman Burj until his death, before later falling
