Reiseplan
1
Kyoto
On our evening food crawl, we’re trading katana for chopsticks to sharpen your appetite on centuries of stealthy street eats and legendary izakaya fare.
15 Minuten
2
Einkaufsviertel Nishiki Market
Charge straight into Nishiki Market—known by locals as "Kyoto's Kitchen"—as the daytime crowds retreat. Kick off with ivory sheets of freshly pulled yuba tofu, crafted with pure water drawn from a thousand-year-old underground aquifer. Step up to the knife block that’s lasted four centuries since the market began, where a veteran shokunin slices razor-thin cuts of ruby-red tuna and coral-orange salmon sashimi that glide down like silk.
45 Minuten
3
Nishiki Tenmangu
Next comes a golden pocket of Ōmi beef croquette—the holy grail of prized marbled wagyu with a crunchy panko crust and a melt-in-your-mouth interior. Reset the palate with a refreshing mandarin orange mochi, a citrus gem wrapped in velvety white bean paste and pillowy rice dough. We won’t reveal all 13+ tastings, but consider this your warning: come hungry.
Pause at Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine to rub the sacred bronze bull for good fortune before slipping along Kiyamachi Street, a canal-side district lined with glowing red lanterns.
1 Stunde
4
Kiyamachi Straße
Duck into a wooden izakaya for a warrior’s feast. Tackle mustard-stuffed lotus root, whose nose-tingling yellow blend is sharp enough to wake a sleeping shogun. Follow that with thick, slurp-worthy curry udon noodles in an umami-rich gravy, alongside flame-grilled chicken tsukune skewers glistening in a caramelized soy glaze. Round out the tavern banquet with a chilled glass of umeshu plum highball over ice.
1 Stunde
5
Pontocho
Refuelled, stalk through the narrow alleyways of Pontocho and into Gion—streets where samurai once held clandestine encounters and geisha moved like ghosts behind paper screens. Tread over the cobblestones past the moonlit waters of Shirakawa Canal and across the iconic Tatsumi Bridge.
30 Minuten
6
Gion
Devour the city's ultimate post-battle comfort food: the wild-card issen yoshoku (Kyoto's historic "one-sen pancake"), loaded with wagyu beef, runny egg yolk, springy konjac, and crisp green scallions. Toast the night with local sake rice wine, famed across Japan for its clean finish born from Fushimi’s mineral-rich springs. End on a sweet note with skewered rice dumplings (hanami dango), a chewy, tri-color nod to the changing seasons.
Our culinary crusade concludes outside the grand facade of Minamiza Theatre, where the drama of Kabuki performance and samurai legends takes a bow to Kyoto’s food scene after dark. This is when the city’s flavors come alive with our tastemaker guides—go it alone, and you’ll merely scratch the surface of Japanese cuisine.
