The Hanging Church is one of the oldest and most famous churches in Egypt, located in ,Old Cairo,above the gate of the Roman fortress of Babylon.
Officially known as the,Hanging Church**, it dates back to around the 3rd–4th century AD, although it has been restored many times over the centuries.
It is called “Hanging” because it is built on top of the fortress walls, making it appear as if it is suspended in the air. The church belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church and holds great religious and historical importance.
Inside, it features a unique wooden ceiling shaped like Noah’s Ark, along with beautiful ancient icons that illustrate biblical stories in traditional Coptic style. The atmosphere is quiet, spiritual, and deeply historic.
The church also played an important role in Coptic history, as it once served as the seat of the Coptic Pope
the Hanging Church is not just a place of worship—it is a living symbol of Egypt’s Coptic heritage and centuries of continuous history.
