Glocken- und Trommeltürme
The Beijing Bell and Drum Towers, located at the northern end of Beijing's Central Axis, are iconic ancient landmarks that served as the official timekeeping center during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. First built in 1272 and reconstructed multiple times, the two towers follow the tradition of "morning bells and evening drums": the 46.7-meter-high Drum Tower houses ancient drums that marked night watches, while the 47.9-meter-high Bell Tower contains China's largest and best-preserved ancient bronze bell weighing 63 tons, whose sound once spread over 20 kilometers. Today, as a key cultural relic and part of the UNESCO-listed Beijing Central Axis, they are open to visitors, who can enjoy panoramic views of the old city and watch traditional bell and drum performances, experiencing the unique historical charm of ancient Beijing.

It boasts beautiful lake views, well-preserved ancient hutongs, traditional courtyard houses, and famous cultural sites including Prince Gong’s Mansion and Yinding Bridge. Stretching about 800 meters from north to south, it has a special layout with 16 symmetrical side alleys on both sides, forming a unique centipede shape. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, many nobles, officials and scholars lived here, leaving behind numerous traditional courtyard houses and historical sites. Today, it is a lively pedestrian street combining old Beijing charm and modern fashion, where visitors can wander along the stone paths, taste local snacks, visit creative shops and cafes, and experience the authentic culture and lifestyle of old Beijing.
