These slaves were primarily brought from Malaysia, Indonesia, and various African countries by the Dutch East India Company. The neighborhood has a strong Muslim influence, as many of the early residents were Muslim slaves,The vibrant, brightly painted houses are one of Bo-Kaap's most distinctive features. The tradition of painting houses in bright colors is said to have started as an expression of freedom and joy after the end of apartheid.
