Originally a fortified keep it was transformed into a renaissance palace by Bavaria’s rulers and over the next four centuries became one of the largest and most beautiful palaces in the world. Besides being a home the Residenz was also centre of Bavarian government, intrigue and power politics from 1508 to 1918 and over the centuries it has seen dukes, kings, poets, emperors and revolutionaries pass through its doors.
