The Sassi of Matera were included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1993. It was the first site on the list in southern Italy. The inscription was motivated by the fact that they represent a unique urban ecosystem, capable of perpetuating the most distant prehistoric past, the ways of life of the caves up to modern times. The Sassi of Matera are a good example of a careful use over time of natural resources: water, land and energy.
