برزخ كورنث هو شريط ضيق من الأرض يربط وسط اليونان بالبيلوبونيز، في حين أن القناة التي تم فتحها فيه تربط خليج سارونيك بخليج كورنث. يبلغ طوله حوالي ٦ كيلومترات وأضيق نقطة هي حيث تم بناء قناة كورنث (١٨٨٠-١٨٩٣). كانت نقطة استراتيجية ولهذا السبب تم بناء سور بالفعل منذ العصور القديمة (نهاية القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد)، والذي ظل محفوظًا حتى البيزنطيين (هيكساميليون).

كانت كورنث مدينة دولة (بوليس) تقع على برزخ كورنث، وهو الامتداد الضيق من الأرض الذي يربط البيلوبونيز بالبر الرئيسي لليونان، في منتصف الطريق تقريبًا بين أثينا وأسبرطة. تقع مدينة كورنث الحديثة على بعد حوالي ٥ كيلومترات (٣.١ ميل) شمال شرق الآثار القديمة. منذ عام ١٨٩٦، كشفت التحقيقات الأثرية المنهجية لحفريات كورنث التي أجرتها المدرسة الأمريكية للدراسات الكلاسيكية في أثينا عن أجزاء كبيرة من المدينة القديمة، وألقت الحفريات الأخيرة التي أجرتها وزارة الثقافة اليونانية الضوء على جوانب جديدة مهمة من العصور القديمة.
