This tour takes you beyond a standard shrine visit and into the older ritual world of Suwa. Walk through Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya, where sacred Onbashira pillars and the shrine’s unusual layout hint at a faith shaped by mountains, land, and ancient ceremonies. At Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum, discover the Moriya family and the distinctive rituals they preserved for centuries. The tour then continues to Kamisha Maemiya, a quiet shrine closely linked to the origins of Suwa faith. Short but deep, this walk is ideal for travelers who want to understand Japan’s ancient shrine traditions, not just admire beautiful shrine buildings.

exploring the unique faith of the Suwa region. Located at the foot of Mt. Moriya, the shrine is known for its distinctive layout, including sacred pillars called Onbashira standing at the four corners of the shrine precincts. Unlike many other Shinto shrines, Honmiya does not have a conventional main sanctuary, and its ritual structure is often discussed in connection with mountain worship and the sacred landscape behind the shrine. Walking through its precincts introduces visitors to the visible face of Suwa faith: formal shrine architecture, ritual space, legends, purification practices, and the powerful presence of the Onbashira tradition

The Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum preserves and displays documents and ritual materials passed down by the Moriya family, who served for centuries as Jinchokan, one of the priestly offices of Suwa Shrine’s Kamisha. The museum offers rare insight into the older ritual world behind Suwa Taisha, including medieval documents, local religious authority, and ceremonies that differ greatly from the image of ordinary shrine worship. One of the most important themes is the Ontosai ritual, whose former offerings reveal the close relationship between hunting, agriculture, local governance, and offerings to the deity in Suwa faith. The museum also helps visitors understand why the Moriya family and traditions related to Mishaguji are so important when discussing the deeper layers of Suwa’s religious history.

Suwa Taisha Kamisha Maemiya is often described as one of the most ancient and significant places in the Kamisha tradition. Located on a sunny hillside with abundant spring water, it is traditionally regarded as a place closely connected with the origins of Suwa faith. The surrounding area, known as Gobara, was once an important ritual center of Kamisha, associated with the residence of the Ohohori, the living representative of the Suwa deity, and with ceremonies that supported the religious authority of the shrine. Compared with the grander atmosphere of Honmiya, Maemiya feels quieter and more archaic, allowing visitors to sense the older landscape of Suwa worship through its slopes, water, small shrines, and ritual traces.
