Experience traditional Japanese woodworking in Magome, a historic post town on the Nakasendo Trail.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll make your own pair of chopsticks from Kiso Hinoki, a Japanese cypress known for its beautiful grain and fresh natural aroma.
Using a traditional Japanese hand plane called a KANNA, you’ll shape the wood by hand and experience the smooth feeling, sound, and distinctive aroma of freshly shaved Hinoki. After shaping your chopsticks, you’ll finish them with sandpaper and can personalize them using a wood-burning tool to add your name, initials, or a simple design.
