Legong Kraton is a refined classical dance that presents a highly stylized royal drama performed by three dancers: a court attendant and two identically dressed legongs portraying noble characters. Accompanied by the expressive rhythms of a gamelan orchestra, the performance relies on graceful movements and musical nuance to suggest changes of scene and emotion.
The story, rooted in 12th–13th century East Javanese history, tells of King Lasem, who finds the maiden Rangkesari lost in the forest and imprisons her in his palace. Her brother, the Prince of Daha, threatens war unless she is freed. Rangkesari pleads for peace, but the king chooses battle. On his way to the battlefield, he encounters a bird that foretells his death. Ignoring the omen, he proceeds to fight and is ultimately killed, a fate foreshadowed in his poignant farewell before war.
