St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican is the largest and most famous Christian place of worship in the world, a symbol of Catholicism and a masterpiece of Renaissance and Baroque art.
History and context
The basilica stands in St. Peter's Square, in Vatican City, and is built over the tomb of the Apostle Peter, who was martyred in the 1st century AD. The first basilica, known as the Constantinian, was built between 319 and 349 AD by order of Emperor Constantine, and stood until the 16th century. The current basilica began construction on April 18, 1506, under Pope Julius II, with the project assigned to Donato Bramante, and saw contributions from great artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, Carlo Maderno, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, being completed after more than a century of work.
