About two hours west of Alexandria, the El Alamein War Museum lays out the 1942 battle that stopped the Axis advance toward the Suez Canal. You walk among tanks, field guns, and the uniforms of the British, German, Italian, and Egyptian forces, while your guide traces how the desert campaign unfolded across these dunes. Maps and dioramas make sense of a battle fought over open sand with almost no landmarks. It is a compact, well-kept museum that rewards an unhurried visit.

Nearby lie the war cemeteries, rows of headstones in the silent desert where soldiers of many nations were laid to rest.
