The Norman staircase of Castelmezzano is a steep path carved into the rock that connects the village to the top of the castle; a narrow and evocative passage, used in medieval times to reach strategic lookout points over the Basento valley.

The historic center of Castelmezzano is a picturesque network of stone houses nestled among the rocks of the Lucanian Dolomites, with narrow alleys, stairways, and scenic views; at its heart stands the Mother Church, dedicated to Santa Maria dell’Olmo, a medieval-origin building that has been renovated several times, featuring a simple interior with some noteworthy artistic elements.

The ruins of the Norman-Swabian castle of Castelmezzano, located in the highest part of the village, preserve remains of walls, towers, and a staircase carved into the rock; an ancient medieval fortification with a defensive function, today reduced to a few evocative historical and panoramic remains.
