We visit the former site of one of Buenos Aires’ most influential German-language newspapers. Here, we explore the role of the German press in Argentina and how it became an important voice of support for Nazism within the German community.

At one of the historic institutions of Buenos Aires’ German community, we discuss the diversity of German immigration to Argentina and the divisions created by Hitler’s rise to power, including the different responses to Nazism within the community.

We explore the organized presence of Nazism in Argentina: its political organizations, activities, and connections within the German community. We also discuss how the Argentine government responded to these organizations and the investigations into Nazi activities in the country.

One of the tour’s most striking stops. We discuss the massive 1938 gathering at Luna Park organized by Nazi-aligned sectors of Argentina’s German community. Historical photographs help us contrast today’s Buenos Aires with one of the most remarkable episodes of this period.

With the Río de la Plata as our backdrop, we reconstruct the 1939 Battle of the River Plate, one of the first major naval engagements of World War II. We follow the story of the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee, its arrival in Montevideo, and its dramatic scuttling off the Uruguayan coast.

We conclude the tour by turning from perpetrators and politics to victims and remembrance. At the Anne Frank Monument, we reflect on the Holocaust, its memory in Buenos Aires, and Argentina’s complex relationship with the legacy of World War II.
