The Brotherhood of Black Penitents was the first to be formed in Aubagne in 1551. The men and women who were part of it were granted the right to meet that year in St. Michael's Chapel, a chapel that was no longer used for worship.

The Brotherhood of Grey Penitents was the last to be established in 1672. It is their chapel that you have before you and as you can see, it has a much more sober style than those of the White and Black Penitents.
