بُني هذا المسجد في القرن الثاني عشر، وهو أحد أقدم المساجد وأكثرها روعة في البلاد. وقد جعله عظمته وجماله وجهة سياحية شهيرة، وهو رمز لتاريخ المدينة وثقافتها الغنية.

حي الملاح هو عبارة عن مجموعة صغيرة من الشوارع تقع على مرمى حجر من المدينة القديمة، بجوار قصر الباهية الضخم. يسكن الحي اليوم مئات اليهود، ولكن بين القرنين السادس عشر والعشرين كان موطنًا لواحدة من أكبر الجاليات اليهودية في البلاد، والتي تتكون في الغالب من اليهود الذين طردوا من شبه الجزيرة الأيبيرية وغيرها من الأراضي الأوروبية.
